These super perennials fully deserve their recent upsurge in interest. Their graceful nodding trumpet flowers make a perfect addition to the border and they will provide a continuous supply of blooms from June until well into the autumn.
Penstemons were a particular Victorian favourite and hundreds of large-flowered varieties were used in formal bedding schemes. Whole borders were dedicated to them and many had the suffix 'Bedder' as part of their name. They lost favour between the two world wars but then interest in them has revived in recent years.
Penstemons are excellent border plants, preferring a nice sunny position with good drainage and are remarkably drought tolerant. Removing flowers as they fade will keep the plants vigorous and flowering from May until the first frost.
