Truffaut's semi-autobiographical first feature from 1959, 400 Blows, won him Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival and paved the way for low budget films using improvisation, location filming and forceful editing.

Widely regarded as his best film, Jules et Jim is a classic of French cinema starring Jeanne Moreau as fated lover Catherine, whilst The Woman Next Door stars Gerard Depardieu and Fanny Ardant as two ex-lovers living next door to each other.
